Turtle Island is derived from various Native creation stories – Mohawk, Lakota and Mi’kmaq.
The Mohawks believed that the earth was placed on a Turtle’s shell who became the Earth-Bearer.
In another legend, the Turtle offered his back for the foundation of the earth. After there was a flood, the earth grew rapidly from the mud and became an island – receiving a resting place for the Light and the Woman (Sky Mother) where man came from.
