All Wabanaki had one thing in common – the shores were their homes. Our way of life and our beliefs were related to the waters and the shores – they sustained our spiritual life and our very existence.
Today, our shores are too weak to sustain many forms of life. What kind of life are we leaving our children when the very element that keeps us alive is too full of poisons to exist?
Quoting Chief Seathl:
“What will it take to inject a sense of urgency in this country?
Do we have to tear a hole in the sky? We’ve done it. Do we have to see life-giving rain be turned into poison? We’ve done it.”
Reassured by Black Elk:
“After the herb of understanding was imparted to the earth, a voice went all over the universe and filled it. Everything was good. Behold this day – for it is yours to make.”
