This piece shows the images of my Godchildren being smudged with traditional medicines.
Godparents, in old Mi’kmaw tradition, were held in great respect among the People – more than what it means in the Christianity sense.
The Smudge in our society was a sacred way of blessing or purifying. It is common, before an important event, to smudge a person whether living or deceased. It was a purification process to send good thoughts to our Creator.
The Smudge itself usually contained native herbs. It was powerful medicine.
In a sense, this is my way of blessing my Godchildren - Jeanette Azelis Bear and Jewl Christmas.
